Managing Your WordPress Media Library

Your WordPress media library holds every image, PDF, and file on your site. Keeping it organized and using images correctly has a direct impact on page speed and SEO.

Uploading Images

Go to Media in the left sidebar and click Add New. Drag and drop your files or click Select Files to browse. For photos and graphics, use JPEG for photographs and PNG or WebP for logos and graphics with transparent backgrounds.

Naming Files for SEO

Before you upload a file, rename it to describe what’s in the image. Use hyphens between words instead of spaces or underscores. For example, team-photo-2025.jpg is better than IMG_4832.jpg. This helps Google understand your images.

Writing Alt Text

Alt text describes an image for people using screen readers and for search engines. When you insert an image in the editor, add a short, accurate description in the Alt Text field. Avoid phrases like “image of” — just describe what you see.
